Sample insights

The kind of thing you'll learn in a typical week.

The same kinds of signals show up in every local market. These illustrative examples span a dental practice, a med spa, an auto repair shop, a landscaping company and a plumber. They're written to show the format and aren't about real businesses.

Illustrative examples, not real companies

View a full sample brief →

Pricing Dental practice · illustrative

A nearby practice now advertises a new-patient exam, cleaning and X-rays for about $40 less than yours, through the end of the month.

What it means for you: Don't race to the bottom. Your same-week appointments and in-house membership plan are things their offer doesn't mention. Put both right next to your new-patient price.

Reputation Med spa · illustrative

A competitor leads you by about half a star on one major review site, and the recurring theme in your critical reviews is long waits past the booked time.

What it means for you: A text when you're running behind, plus a review request after each follow-up visit, is the fastest way to lift that weaker profile.

Website Auto repair · illustrative

One rival shop now publishes flat prices for oil changes, brake pads and diagnostics on its homepage. Nobody else nearby does.

What it means for you: Drivers get an answer to “what will it cost?” before they ever call. Posting starting prices for your top three services turns a phone call into a booking.

Hiring Landscaping · illustrative

A larger landscaping company in your area has had crew-lead and equipment-operator openings posted for 30+ days, heading into fall cleanup season.

What it means for you: You're competing for the same crews. Your careers page shows no pay ranges. Adding them, plus your season schedule, helps you stand out to the same candidates.

Competitor Just Changed Something · Plumbing example

A rival plumber just added a $0 diagnostic with any paid repair, running through the end of the month.

Why it matters
“Free diagnostic” is a strong hook for price-sensitive callers during the fall rush, and it's being promoted on their homepage.
What to do
Lead with what you already include (upfront pricing, no overtime fees) instead of matching on price. Here's a post you can use today:

No surprises, no overtime fees. 🔧 [Your company] gives you an upfront price before any work starts, nights and weekends included. Book: [your phone]

Ready-to-use asset Sample post · any business

No surprises: our prices are posted. ✅ [Your top service] starts at [your price], and [your membership or plan] members save [your member discount]. Book this week: [your phone] · [your booking link]

Offer angle: “The price on the door.” Show your starting prices and your guarantee in writing, and run your offer right after local competitors' promos end.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Where does the information come from?

Only public sources: competitor websites, offer and coupon pages, public review sites, job postings, and local news and weather. Every item in your brief links to its source, and anything we can't verify is clearly marked as unverified.

How is it delivered?

By email, once a week. Each brief is short and laid out the same way every time: the week in one line, pricing, reputation and hiring, three moves, the bottom line, and ready-to-use posts. No app or login needed.

How are my competitors chosen?

You can name up to three when you sign up. If you'd rather not, we pick the businesses you're most likely competing with for the same customers in your area and confirm the list with you before your first brief. You can swap competitors anytime by replying to any email.

Which businesses and markets do you cover?

Local service businesses in U.S. cities and metro areas: dental practices, med spas, auto repair shops, law firms, accounting and tax practices, landscaping, pest control and cleaning companies, and home services like HVAC, plumbing, roofing and electrical. If your business competes for customers in a local area and you don't see it listed, choose “Other local service” in the form and tell us what you do. We'll let you know if we can help.

Does it work for regulated fields like legal, dental or med spa?

Yes. We track the same public signals: published prices and offers, memberships, consultations, reviews, hiring and website changes. The ready-to-use posts are drafts with [brackets] for details only you can confirm. Please check them against your professional advertising rules (for example your state bar, dental board or medical board) before you publish.

What are “Competitor Just Changed Something” alerts?

An optional add-on to the weekly brief. We check your competitors' key pages more often, and when something material changes, like a new promotion, a price change or a hiring push, we send a short alert covering what changed, why it matters and one or two things you can do, often with a ready-to-use post.

Is this legal and ethical?

We only review information businesses publish openly, the same pages any customer can see. We don't access anything behind a login, pose as customers, use data brokers or collect personal information. It's the same research a smart owner would do by hand, organized for you every week.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There's no contract. Your first month is free, then it's $97/month. To cancel, just reply to any brief or email dylan@thesignalbrief.com.

How do I get started?
